- China desperately saving crops ...
China has issued the national ‘yellow alert’ in response to its first national drought. This happened on Thursday Aug 18 as regions around Sichuan and Shanghai which are close to Yangtze river basin have experienced weeks of extreme heat.
China Government officials have cited that this is due to global climate change. Authorities has been mobilised to battle forest fires and specialist teams have been sent to protect crops from the scorching temperatures.
The ‘yellow alert’ is the 3rd most serious warning on China, Beijing’s scale. One of Yangtze’s most important flood basins in Jiangxi, China, Poyang Lake, has now shrunk to a quarter of its usual size.
According to China’s state broadcaster, an estimated 66 rivers across 34 counties in Chongqing region have dried up. There is a 60 percent decline in rainfall in Chongqing region compared to last year. This resulted in many districts soil drying up due to the lack of moisture.
One of Chongqing districts of Beibei saw temperatures reach 45 degrees Celsius on Thursday according to China Weather Agency. While in Shanghai it was 37 degrees Celsius. Other districts such as Bishan are approaching 39 degrees Celsius.
Firefighters are on high alert as forest blazes and mountains continue to erupt, infrastructure and emergency services have come under immense strain. There are also increasing reports of heatstroke as the drought continues.
Gas utilities in the region have also told customers that they will cut off supplies until further notice as they deal with safety hazards. To deal with this crisis, the Chongqing region has set up expert teams to protect vulnerable crops as well as expanded planting to compensate for upcoming losses ahead of autumn harvest.
The water resources ministry has drawn up rotas in drought regions to determine who can access the supplies to prevent shortage. This drought has caused a direct economic loss of an estimated 2.73 billion yuan and affected 5.5 million people.
While China’s National Meteorological Centre (NMC) has renewed its ‘red alert’ high temperature on Friday. Many weather forecasters have predicted that the heatwave is expected to last until Aug 26.
